Alias

10/10

By Brian Michael Bendis & Michael Gaydos

Alias This is one of the best comics series I've ever seen. As an ongoing series, perhaps only Preacher surpasses it. And as a relatively short series (28 issues), it is still readable as a single story.

The trick here is two-fold: an incredible, unique character in Jessica Jones, an ex-superhero who now works as a private investigator. Jessica is tough-talking but has a lot of demons that she tries to exorcise throughout the series.

Bendis's other brilliant insight was to set this in the regular Marvel universe. So while Jessica's stories are "mature" and grim, she is interacting with and discovering new sordid sides of characters we've been familiar with for decades.
